Where does a young ENGINEER stand in Pakistan?

This is the question I am asking to myself from the day I have completed my graduation.  As far as, I have observed, our engineers stand nowhere in our society. No one is raising voice about the unemployment of engineers. No one is talking on social media about this issue and the reason is that they have bigger issues to discuss. Why do they care about this one?  But what’s the purpose of Pakistan Engineering Council? Why do we need this institution? Is their only purpose to just accredit the Engineering Universities? What Engineering council is doing at the other end, the job sector? Nothing, they are doing nothing. Oh yes few months ago, they have taken the huge step towards this issue. They have provided the engineers with (15%-20%) discounts on different brands. For God’s sake, they do not need this lollypop; this is not the step our engineers need at this crucial time.  They need assurance. They need appreciation. They need reward of their hard work. Even I will say, they need handsome pay too.  The reason is that in our society, somewhere respect comes with money too. Their parents put the same faith in them as the parents of other profession’s students do.  Recently the elections of Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) have been held. This is the only time when they call engineers and ask them to vote for them. They represent some amazing reforms that they will do if they get selected. But one can vote for them when he/she has lost trust in them. How one can vote for them when every other week he/she has to give job tests conducted by their looting testing services at the cost of Rs 700.  Those testing services who do not know the basics of engineering even.

Our engineers are doing jobs at the pay of just 15 to 20k. To get into any engineering institutions, they pass through same tough phase as medical or in any other profession students do. They put their best during their four years of degree as a medical students do. Then where does the difference lie? The difference lies in acknowledgement and appreciation. We are standing at the stage that the person who does not know that what work engineer do in his field, he knows that doing engineering is useless in Pakistan. We are standing at the stage where engineers are getting depressed. I know any student at this stage of their life needs patience but they need to be assured that they will get recognized, they will get rewarded. With the time being, the competition in every other field is growing but the situation is not same in engineering sector of Pakistan. The merit of engineering institutions is falling every year. The young and bright students do not want to come towards this field. The reason is not that they do not have passion for this field. The ground reality is that they know they will not get rewarded at the end of their degrees. Every other graduated engineer is suggesting to others:

“Yar engineering mai kuch nahi rakha hoa is sy acha CA kr lo”

He/She is saying this because he does not want that student to suffer as he is suffering.  Few years ago, maybe I would have denied this statement and would say that “Do not think about money. Do not think about job. Think about your passion. Think about what you want to do” But not now. I have faced the reality of this pathetic system. I will never ever suggest this field to any other student.

We have to think about this aspect. Engineers play a very important role in the development of country’s economy. Their role is to design, build and innovate every other thing we see around ourselves. But in Pakistan, their role is just getting limited to memes and jokes. These are all the reasons that there is no innovation in PAKISTAN.

“Scientist or other columnists suggest theories. The implementation of these theories is done by ENGINEERS.”
